For nonprofits, nothing is better than receiving cash donations. Unlike a grant, which allows the funder to specify how and when the money can be spent, cash donations are unrestricted, which means the organization gets to decide how the money will be spent.

One of the easiest ways to launch a fundraising campaign is to add a donation button to your website or Facebook account. Below we profile a few tools you can use to advertise your fundraising campaign and collect donations.

Options for Creating an Online Fundraising Campaign

If you want to add a donation button to your website, one of the best-known methods is to set up a donation button through the payment processor PayPal. PayPal offers nonprofits the ability to collect donations through websites, emails, and even in person.

If you want the benefit of a dedicated donation page—which can come in handy if you don’t have your own website—you may want to look at the crowdfunding platform FundRazr. FundRazr uses PayPal, Stripe, and WePay to process donations. With FundRazr, you can launch a fundraising campaign, including international campaigns, and share it through your website and social media accounts.

A third option is somewhat of a cross between PayPal and FundRazr. Zoho Checkout allows nonprofits to collect one-time and recurring donations. For payment processors, Zoho uses PayPal, WePay, and Stripe, among others. To advertise your fundraising campaign, you can embed a donation form on your website, in an email (Zoho integrates with MailChimp), or distribute it through social media.

Collecting Donations through Your Facebook Page

You may be able to use your Facebook page to collect donations if your organization is located in the U.S. or Europe (15 European countries at the time of this writing). After you go through Facebook's requirements to set up a donation button, you can add the campaign to your Facebook page or allow your followers to insert a fundraising button on their personal Facebook pages. One of the advantages of collecting donations through Facebook is that Facebook covers the processing fees, which makes it one of the least expensive methods for collecting donations.
